Review: „Death Proof“ by Quentin Tarantino

(Second part of „Grindhouse“ double feature with Robert Rodriguez’ „Planet Terror“)

The storyline is narrated around two groups of girls which one of them in each group is a model who started carrier shortly before. In general all the girls are wicked and in-heated as girls are rarely outside mens phantasies, especially old men I presume, which seems to be the main topic of Quentins last movie. For example it turns a lot about the young womens feet which are maybe nice but normally you’re not so much interested in feet, I mean there are definetely other more interesting parts. But in one of the best scenes a cutted leg of one girl is flying straight through the air and drops to the ground jerking like a spider leg after her and her girlfriends car crashed frontally because she put it out of the open window before. It’s a typical Tarantino and I really enjoyed that because while watching I started to hate that f***ing bitches I will get to that point later. There is an old guy -“Stuntman Mike“, played by Kurt Russell- which is jealous about his non-success in life, his ageing and because he will not be able to get one of this young chicks in his bed ever again. This guy is really disgusting, very impressive is his introduction to the story by eating a pizza so nasty and noisy that it’s shuddering. „Stuntman Mike“ has taken to observe young girls and drive nearby them in his 1970 Chevy Nova muscle car which is special designed as a stuntmen car and „death proof“ as he claims.

Really „Stuntman Mike“ isn’t the sort of guy I would normally sympathize with but in this movie I came to that very soon. More precisely I don’t sympathize with him – I only hope that he will succeed. He is a ripper by using his „death proof“ car to kill young ladies and in the context of the movie that seems to be not a bad idea because dead they’re at least shut their f***ing mouth: Three quarters of the whole movie only consists of girl A meet girl B and they talking about something shit then girl C comes around and she has some more shit to talk about and don’t forget girl D who was out for a half hour refreshing her reserves in shit-talking. I mean Tarantino is a great screenplay writer but here are only dialogues without any sense, story or humor. You became an auto-agressive finger-nail-chewer while watching the movie and you’re begging: „Pleeeeeeeeeaaaaaaase, Stuntman Mike, drive around and kill this f***ing bitches, free me from this machine gun fire of senseless information and allow me five minutes silence, I can no more…“

„Death proof“ started so promising with its 1970ies style and theme and then it turned into that 2 hours stupid girls talking shit. Another thing I will not forgive you, Mr. Tarantino, is that you really perverted the Bullitt car chase scene in the last 10 minutes of the movie. To copy things from holy cultural goods like „Bullitt“ with Steve McQueen is not a bagatelle especially if you give it that prefix of stupid shit-talking girls who from now will rule the world, or what does that f***ing end mean?
